Basically, on the Census, or any chance I get, I check the box that says "Black/ African American." For me, that is the most accurate description. I am African American. When I go home to visit my brothers and family I go to Africa. Morocco is North Africa. Not the Middle East. Morocco is further west than England.

The US Census sees North Africans and Mideastern Arabs as Caucasian AKA White. Is this an awkwardly-handed gift of White privilege? It works to boost their numbers. That's why I won't participate. The "Black/African American" numbers need to be boosted.

I don't get to pass for White with White Americans and have nothing to do with their culture. I did grow up with White people. Yet I wasn't exactly one of them. Within my friends, yeah I was one of the gang. But when traveling with White friends I was the one pulled aside for questioning at the border. It still happens.

I was naive and did not understand why I was seen as different until I chose to study in Paris where the authorities know what a North African face and name looks like, better than the American border patrol. The Americans just see a dark guy. In Paris I was detained for searches on the train, in public, and at the airport. The police department had me check in regularly to fill out paperwork and answer questions. They wanted to make sure I didn't try to move there.

When I returned to the United States I was better equipped to recognize White confusion. "Where are you from?" And "Your name is so unique." And "I just have never heard of someone named Youssef." or "Do you know Yusef Lateef?"

Why does the Census want to know which part of Africa I represent? For statistics reasons? I stand with all of Africa. The NYT proposal is interesting. Add a box on the Census for SWANA or MENA, but again it's divisive. Why does the Census want to break North Africa from Central Africa, West Africa, East Africa, or South Africa? I will still want to check the box that says "Black/African American." Yes. Count me in with Black and African American Peoples. Please.

Africa holds immense beauty and power, with vibrant cultures and rich
resources. Sadly, colonial powers carved
Africa into fragmented pieces, easier to exploit and control. These
divisions fostered conflict and instability, serving those who sought to
maintain power, and their legacy lingers today, in the oddest places. Yet, the dream of a
united Africa, a force for good in the world, remains a powerful
aspiration.

---------------------------------------------------------

I am going to read in a SWANA event in SF on March 21. I will tell you more about the details soon, on this blog. In the meantime, take advantage of the free article link. It's thought provoking.

Youssef Alaouihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16337439881853379024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1259355357661381514.post-23269494925863317172024-02-12T10:56:00.000-08:002024-02-12T10:56:54.087-08:00Libraries, Literature, Loss
Paris kept me busy these past few months. Family reasons and personal studies brought me there, but sadness struck with the passing of my beloved aunt Najia (bsmillah). She's deeply missed, especially by my uncle Serge who's heartbroken. I spent her final days with her and Serge at the hospital.

It is my belief that studying poetry in school is valuable, but fostering a personal connection with the art of composing poems is an even more enriching modality of empowerment. Therefore, serving as a judge in this competition is an honor.

Poetry Out Loud is a national program that empowers high school students by encouraging them to memorize and recite classic and contemporary poems. It provides them with a unique opportunity to develop their public speaking skills, deepen their understanding of language, and connect with the power of words.

I am excited to witness the talent and dedication of the students competing in the finals. They have undoubtedly put in a lot of hard work to prepare, and my fellow judges and I are eager to hear them share their passion for poetry.

During my youth, I immersed myself in English, American, Senegalese, Cameroonian, and French literature. My graduate studies further expanded my understanding, encompassing classical Arabic poems, Spanish odes, and contemporary Moroccan poetry. I have actively participated in, organized, and witnessed poetry readings of all kinds from private salon readings to workshops, regional festivals, and worldwide slam competitions.

As a judge, I will be seeking students who demonstrate a clear understanding of the poems they recite, coupled with the ability to connect with the audience through their performance. Passion for poetry and the ability to convey it to others are qualities I will highly value.

Poetry Out Loud is a remarkable program with the potential to profoundly impact young lives. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it and look forward to helping select the next San Luis Obispo County champion.

Click the graphic for more info:

Youssef Alaouihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16337439881853379024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1259355357661381514.post-87947678414812929662023-11-26T12:56:00.000-08:002023-11-26T14:16:16.986-08:00San Luis Obispo County Poet Laureate
I was born in San luis Obispo and rerooted here 14 years ago. Yes this is a wacky and hugely fun and entertaining rock n roll musical play written by Dick Zigun the former Mayor of Coney Island, yes the man who created the Mermaid Parade and many other fun activities that happen at Coney Island. AVT has a long history with Coney Island and the Film Festival at the Museum Theater and Freak Show Theater inside Coney Island USA.

The play is called Killin Republicans but it's not a vindictive against Republicans. It is a retelling of our country's politics and how some people can be crazy enough to want to assassinate a president. It also talks about our society and basically pokes fun at everything.

It takes place inside an airplane flying from London to NYC but gets rerouted to Washington DC. There's music, a live rock band, plenty of laughs, AND I AM THE CAPTAIN! So, fasten your seatbelts. I'm quite a ham it turns out.

Read the writeup here.

Youssef Alaouihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16337439881853379024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1259355357661381514.post-56039020536820533962023-11-26T12:15:00.000-08:002023-11-26T12:18:14.640-08:00International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival

We took another great award at the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival last month. I have a book of rich and amazing poems in queue at the publisher. My book of science fiction is circulating with publishers right now. I am also writing a few new books. One is a set of five
interlocking tales set in Morocco in the 1930's. The other is a novel
about a man who grows a nasty bump on the back of his neck that forces
him to become an acclaimed storyteller. They should be ready soon. That amounts to four new books coming. All new tales, all new characters. If you have attended one of my public appearances lately, you've surely heard about them or heard work from them.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

My book of short fiction is now available on Black Lawrence Press. I am very happy and proud that these tales will live on. Let them live in your mind and on your shelf. Each one is very different. People react to them in different ways. They usually stick in a reader's mind for years, like good literature should.

Love. Birth. Death. Problems. Heartbreak. Magical Realism, always. These are the birthright of Latin American as well as North African prose. Let them be your companions. See them as extended allegories. See them as instruction for self-actualization, for revolution, for evolved living. See them as quaint bedtime stories or alarming afternoon reading.

Description

In June of 2023, Black Lawrence Press welcomed numerous existing and forthcoming Nomadic Press titles to our catalogue. Fiercer Monsters was originally published by Nomadic.

Youssef Alaoui’s short-story collection, Fiercer Monsters,
is concerned with the symbology of letters and the word as invocation,
contrasted with the futility of language. In these stories, Alaoui
presents a Neanderthal oracle, a little girl in Venezuela in the 1950s, a
19th-century hallucinating sailor, and a WWI soldier. The voices are
sometimes salty, always salient. Each voice ultimately laments the fall
of the tower of Babel and the resulting confusion.

Praise

Youssef Alaoui’s investigation sifts through language finding
and discarding gods along the way. Not so much a trip down rabbit holes,
but rather the invention of mirrors. Storytelling in which you find
instruments where time should be. Or the monologue of a man who is
shuffling cards near his own crime scene.
– Tongo Eisen-Martin, author of someone’s dead already (2015)

When unraveling the layers and folds of a Fabulist, you are
never sure whether your experience is new or if you are lost in the
embroidery. With Youssef Alaoui you get some kind of delirious weave
reminiscent of Donald Barthelme and Arthur Conan Doyle. The ultimate
critique is whether you stay engaged or find yourself dumped overboard.
That is the game and mystery of Fiercer Monsters. Youssef Alaoui delivers!
– Michael Rothenberg, author of Big Bridge Magazine

Fiercer Monsters is a colorful tapestry of stories
striking and bleak, elusive and blunt. Alaoui weaves his spicy and tangy
world together with gusto. He smudges edible paints on his literary
canvas, molds his literary dough without fear, everything goes into his
boiling, steaming cauldron and–voila!–he serves you the bright jambalaya
of his own folkloric jazz. Dare to meander along his pungent alleys and
sunny paths, and connect to your very own Brothers Grimm and the
mysterious.
– Zarina Zabrisky, author or A Cute Tombstone (2013); We, Monsters (2014)

The fiction of Youssef Alaoui illuminates the labyrinth of mysticism in the body. His book, Fiercer Monsters,
navigates unique terrain ranging from the borders of legend to visceral
city encounters. Alaoui combines intoxicating visions with an
intellectual clarity that challenges the nature of language itself.
– John Swain, author or Under the Mountain Born (2015)

Whether he is recasting the Tower of Babel story with forest
creatures saved by a shamanic chihuahua, or deciphering Arabish text
slang in the mind of a tortured prisoner whose last refuge—that of his
imagination—is threatening to implode, Youssef Alaoui is never merely
out to entertain, though the richness of his metaphors and the kookiness
of his tales do not fail to charm and delight. No, Alaoui is engaged in
a fiercer struggle, between cultures intent on destroying each other
and themselves, in the cavernous gaps between what can be felt and known
and what can be spoken and understood. Vibrantly lonely, steeped in the
sad funk of human pathos, the fables and incantations in Fiercer Monsters sing from the belly, from the groin, from the broken bone, and from the whole and sheltering heart.
– Sarah Fran Wisby, author of The Heart’s Progress, Plain Wrap Press, 2014

Coney Island is cast as a twilight space; in between life and afterlife, where spirits barter with the Voodoo Loa.

Also slated to read is an all star lineup of Tongo Eisen-Martin, Liza Jessie Peterson, Sharrif Simmons, Thea Matthews, Ademola Lewis, and of course Abiodun. Sugar in the corner store. Sugar snacks. Sugar drinks. Sugar liquor. Thomas Kinkade's perverted images of sleepy towns in the snow. America's perverted Kinkade dreams of sugar dusted houses and white homogeneity. Sugar town cops busting a sugar shoplifting suspect with a knee to the neck pressed into the asphalt as justice. As if it is an officer's responsibility to mete out justice in the streets, into the streets, using the street as a correctional tool. George Floyd. More than Floyd. Sugar as a dead mentality and institution. Sugar as a cage, ending in death. Dead sugar prison complex. Sugar as a symbol of the American dream and the American nightmare. A white balloon needs air to fly and now we know of the Chinese balloon as well as the little French boy’s Red Balloon. I've been holding off on this post because the news is being carried everywhere.

But seriously, THANK YOU, NOMADIC PRESS. They were the first to see value in my writings and encouraged me to write as wildly as I cared to and we proudly brought my collection Fiercer Monsters to life with a roaring fire in a large garden and wonderful readers and incredible music at the launch in 2017. We sold 55 copies that night. There were about 75 in attendance. Fabulous poets read. There were fairy lights everywhere. Full details here and on my events page. If you haven't heard of the Neuronautic Institute, it is a Lower East Side institution and sometimes a press. Matthew Hupert operates this and I'm proud to join. He asked my fiancée Tessa Martin to feature alongside so this will be quite a first! She's got a great set lined up. If you are a Tessa fan (if you know, you know) then she will be featured on the 20th with Jennifer Juneau's series The Phoenix at Shades of Green Pub. That's 6pm.
